Problem Solving Essay In my efforts to solve a problem I have often begun by identifying the one issue that affects me and focus on the individual tasks that led to the problem attempting to use logical and critical thinking. I have hit upon the realization that this focus works well with simpler problems that need immediate clarification but it has proven appropriate that problems that are more difficult and require a more long-term and elaborate answer requires the use of a Systems Thinking approach. My failure to seek broad, long-term solutions has me stamping out grass fires while my house burns down. I have adopted Daniel Aronson ideas on systems thinking to aid in keeping â€Å"the big picture† when developing solutions. Critical and creative thinking processes are required when solving problems using systems thinking but I see the concentration shift from breaking down and examining individual tasks to studying how various system tasks shape both that system and the other systems in which it interacts. When using systems thinking, essential in arriving to an amicable and effective end state are the realizations that must be shared by the solution seekers. To which all players must realize that their roles affect other stakeholders and the desired outcome. Each seeker should study how past solutions have added to a problem and therefore any steps to correct a current problem should be evaluated for negative results and creation of other problems. Crucial too is the required realization that the desired end outcome is affected by outside influences which may not be obvious, controllable or correctable. Regarding the Army’s seven step problem solving process I make the following contribution and observations based on my â€Å"tacit† experience acquired during my career and specifically in completing capstone courses on decision making and development of thinking skills. 1. Identify the problem. This is where I find that people have to be hit in the face before they acknowledge a problem exists. In most instances awareness of a problem exists but is met with apathy unless someone is significantly impacted. But once ownership is taken a great idea is to concisely define the problem and state your desired outcome. Only then can I begin to look for solutions. If I don’t know where I am are going how will I know when I get there? 2. Gather information. Paraphrasing Confucius and Donald Rumsfeld’s thought on the unknown, finding out what I don’t know and then searching for someone who does is always my first choice. I then use that shared knowledge and direction to ensure I am considering the right information and possibly additional differing views of the problem on my path to a solution. 3. Develop Criteria In my development of tests to judge a solution I like to ensure every solution can be judged in using the same standard. I believe â€Å"there is more than one way to skin a cat,† so I want each solution to be fairly judged against the same criteria and not against other solutions. Having several solutions gives me flexibility in later steps. I have often used Substance, Relevance, Timeliness, Simplicity, and gotten good results. 4. Generate Solutions. During this step I have used a variety of methods to come up with solutions. Using established methods and techniques helps to capture and hopefully solidify ideas. Fishbone, Flow Chart, Cause and effect, are a few of many available. I use these same techniques later in step 6. I think at this point whatever method you may select the main goal is to get ideas flowing. My preferred method is brainstorming, by trying different and sometimes combinations of techniques I have found what works best for me. Also important in this step is establishing an open and non-judgmental environment where no solution team member holds back any idea no matter how â€Å"out there† it may seem. That idea might be the one that leads to an innovative answer. 5. Analyze possible solutions. Though each step is working off the ones that come before it I find this step to be the most dependent on the effort and results of all the previous steps. The old axiom â€Å"trash in – trash out† becomes apparent if I half-stepped through the proceeding steps. If I have spent the proper time and effort on steps 1-4 I discovered this one is the easiest to complete. 6. Compare Possible Solutions. In this step I go back to the techniques I mentioned in step 4. My preference is to use a Cause and Effect matrix that helps me to develop action alternatives and the outcome results of each solution. I also revert to my â€Å"go-to† test criteria and determine which solution best meets the exact or multiple criterion I feel are the most important to the particular situation. 7. Make and implement solutions. During the make phase of this step, frequently my role is as one who played a major role in completing the previous phases and is now presenting a plan for verdict and usually I am advocating an individual alternative. In this phase it is imperative for me to communicate and advise decision makers with confidence. If I am tentative in my recommendations buy in and implementation may not happen. After decision my â€Å"implement† role includes facilitating and coordinating the intent of the plan. Lastly it strikes me that even though I know thinking and decision making skills are keys to success I am always amazed that most want to pick the lock.

Mosaic vs Melting Pot

Canada prides itself at home and abroad as a country made up of a cultural mosaic rather than a cultural melting pot. The mosaic is based on our belief that Canada as a whole becomes stronger by having immigrants bring with them their cultural diversity for all Canadians to learn from. The cultural melting pot, as adopted in the United States, tells immigrants that no matter who they have been in the past, upon landing on American shores, they are Americans and are expected to adopt and follow the American way. At the heart of Canadian society is our legal system. Our legal system is based on the English Common Law model, which in turn is based on a value system that places a strict adherence to following procedural rules over the substantive matter before the Court. The Canadian model is based on precedence which means that Courts are loath to do anything that has not been done by some Court previously. This in turn makes Cana- dian Courts very slow to adapt or adopt new ideas or social mores. From a cultural perspective, the Canadian legal system takes the `melting pot' approach, which is to say that culturally unique methods of dispute resolu- tion are not accepted by our legal system. Instead, our legal system imposes its values on all who come before it. For example, in the family separation cases the courts apply English or French legal systems, yet there are varied cultures and people in Canada with different notions of what a family separation should mean or entail and that is not always reflected in court decisions. The courts are not always obliged to take cultural values in account when decisions are made. One of the issues this dichotomy presents are how the Canadian legal system can be more flexible in accepting different values for settling disputes.

Finding Nemo: Overcoming Fear and the Hero’s Journey

In this movie, Marlin, the hero, must find and rescue his son, Memo, who has been captured by divers. Although Marlin is afraid he wills himself to Journey to the deepest, darkest, most dangerous areas of the ocean to find Memo. In Finding Memo, through three critical stages of Joseph Campbell monthly, Marlin discovers that he must overcome his fears in order to save his son. In the â€Å"Ordinary World† stage of the hero's Journey, Marlin expresses inordinate fear towards the ocean and taking risks.While preparing for the first day of school in is anemone, Marlin inquires, â€Å"What's the one thing we have to remember about the ocean? † â€Å"It's not safe,† replied Memo with a heavy sigh. In this ordinary world, the fear that Marlin will conquer is introduced with his parenting. Marlin teaches Memo to fear because of his horrendous past experiences. While Marlin is cultivated and cautious, Memo, on the other hand, is innocuous and imprudent. Because of this, M emo's father is set on sheltering Memo from the outside world. At this point in the journey, Marlin has extreme anxieties that are yet to be conquered.Additionally, Marlin begins to conquer his fear of the â€Å"big blue† and gambling with life as he enters the â€Å"Crossing the Threshold† stage of Campbell monthly. When Memo ventures out into open water to touch â€Å"the butt† (boat), he is nabbed by divers, and Marlin rushes to action and chases the boat. â€Å"l have to find the boat! † he exclaimed as he raced through the violent water. It is at this point that Marlin realizes that fear fades when there is danger at hand. For example, it only takes a split second for Marlin to think before plunging into the thing that has frightened him for years.He takes the first step to vanquishing the terror that controls his life due to the possible death of his son. Memo's capture empowers Marlin to venture on a search and rescue mission, regardless of the per il he is bound to face. During the second critical stage, Marlin begins to apprehend why and how he must stand in the face of danger to surmount his fears. Moreover, during the â€Å"Road Back† stage of the hero's Journey, Marlin releases all of his fear and discovers that some chances are worth taking. Marlin comes to this realization when Dory and several other fish are engaged within a fishing net, andMemo uses his newly found knowledge to hatch a plan to help them elude their cruel fates. â€Å"l can do this,† pleads Memo. Marlin replies with a look of pride and understanding, mire's right. I know you can. † Marlin finally understands that keeping Memo from attempting anything outside of the box because of his own fear. Once he sees that Memo's method worked, he realizes that he does not have to fear for Memo as much as he previously thought. By giving Memo permission to consummate his plan, Marlin quells his fear of trying new things and finally learns to tr ust his son.Because of this close encounter with danger and death, Marlin is able to rid himself of the fear that has controlled him ever since the birth of his son. In the last critical stage of Marlin's Journey, he pulls together all of the erudition he has gathered from his quest to realizes that his fear can be overcame with action. Three critical stages of Joseph Campbell are exemplified as Marlin manumits his son from the clutches of his captors while conquering his fears. From the hero's journey in Finding Memo, one can learn that no matter the size or rationality of the fear, it can be overcome if it is faced head on.

The journalist seems to be the same age or maybe younger than Speaker Two. However, Speaker Two, seems reverent by the casual asking of the questions. He answers the questions with a seemingly hostile tone, as he remembers the horror and terror of the war, â€Å"Sir, Their light hearts turned to stone.† (__) The tone of the poem is emotional. It brings back a feeling that Speaker Two would like to forget about. He will never be able to forget what he saw. He has to tell the journalist about all the death and poverty during and after the war, that way it will never happen again. Levertov creates many feelings in her poem. She gives the sense of being inquisitive, solemn, formal, and reflective. Prehistoric Life During the Permian Period The Permian period was, literally, a time of beginnings and endings. It was during the Permian that the strange therapsids, or mammal-like reptiles, first appearedand a population of therapsids went on to spawn the very first mammals of the ensuing Triassic period. However, the end of the Permian witnessed the most severe mass extinction in the history of the planet, even worse than the one that doomed the dinosaurs tens of millions of years later. The Permian was the last period of the Paleozoic Era (542-250 million years ago), preceded by the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian and Carboniferous periods. Climate and Geography As during the preceding Carboniferous period, the climate of the Permian period was intimately linked with its geography. Most of the earths land mass remained locked up in the supercontinent of Pangea, with remote offshoots comprising present-day Siberia, Australia, and China. During the early Permian period, large portions of southern Pangea were covered by glaciers, but conditions warmed considerably by the beginning of the Triassic period, with the reappearance of vast rain forests at or near the equator. Ecosystems around the globe also became significantly drier, which spurred the evolution of new types of reptiles better adapted to cope with the arid climate. Terrestrial Life During the Permian Period Reptiles: The most important event of the Permian period was the rise of synapsid reptiles (an anatomical term denoting the appearance of a single hole in the skull, behind each eye). During the early Permian, these synapsids resembled crocodiles and even dinosaurs, as witness famous examples like Varanops and Dimetrodon. By the end of the Permian, a population of  synapsids had branched off into therapsids, or mammal-like reptiles; at the same time, the very first archosaurs appeared, diapsid reptiles characterized by the two holes in their skulls behind each eye. A quarter of a billion years ago, no one could have predicted that these archosaurs were destined to evolve into the very first dinosaurs of the Mesozoic Era, as well as pterosaurs and crocodiles!Amphibians: The increasingly dry conditions of the Permian period were not kind to prehistoric amphibians, which found themselves out-competed by more adaptable reptiles (which could venture further onto dry land to lay their to ugh-shelled eggs, whereas amphibians were constrained to living near bodies of water). Two of the most notable amphibians of the early Permian were the six-foot-long Eryops and the bizarre Diplocaulus, which looked like a tentacled boomerang. Insects: During the Permian period, conditions werent yet ripe for the explosion of insect forms seen during the ensuing Mesozoic Era. The most common insects were giant cockroaches, the tough exoskeletons of which gave these arthropods a selective advantage over other terrestrial invertebrates, as well as various types of dragonflies, which werent quite as impressive as their plus-sized forebears of the earlier Carboniferous period, like the foot-long Megalneura. Marine Life During the Permian Period The Permian period has yielded surprisingly few fossils of marine vertebrates; the best-attested genera are prehistoric sharks like Helicoprion and Xenacanthus and prehistoric fish like Acanthodes. (This doesnt mean the worlds oceans werent well-stocked with sharks and fish, but rather that the geologic conditions didnt lend themselves to the fossilization process.) Marine reptiles were extremely scarce, especially compared to their explosion in the ensuing Triassic period; one of the few identified examples is the mysterious Claudiosaurus. Plant Life During the Permian Period If youre not a paleobotanist, you may or may not be interested in the replacement of one weird variety of prehistoric plant  (the lycopods) by another weird variety of prehistoric plant (the glossopterids). Suffice it to say that the Permian witnessed the evolution of new varieties of seed plants, as well as the spread of ferns, conifers, and cycads (which were an essential source of food to the reptiles of the Mesozoic Era). The Permian-Triassic Extinction Everyone knows about the K/T Extinction Event that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, but the most severe mass extinction in earths history was the one that transpired at the end of the Permian period, which annihilated 70 percent of terrestrial genera and a whopping 95 percent of marine genera. No one knows exactly what caused the Permian-Triassic Extinction, though a series of massive volcanic eruptions resulting in a depletion of atmospheric oxygen is the most likely culprit. It was this great dying at the end of the Permian that opened up the earths ecosystems to new kinds of terrestrial and marine reptiles, and led, in turn, to the evolution of dinosaurs.

I procrastinate whenever I have to submit an assignment and this is because of partying and spending time away from my room. I plan to reduce the time that I spend with friends and instead devote this time to studying and preparing for class.
